Help Save Lives with The Little Pink Shelter

Short term fostering can mean a lifetime of joy

Although seven days is a short span of time, at The Little Pink Shelter seven days can mean the difference between life and death. Anyone can make that difference simply by fostering a shelter puppy.

The Little Pink Shelter matches dogs and puppies from southern shelters with adopters in the Northeast. According to Holly Chasin, founder of The Little Pink Shelter, southern shelters are overcrowded, forcing them to kill dogs and puppies on a weekly basis. “When a foster home is found”, Chasin says, “it means that dog or puppy is safe and, in turn, it buys more time for another dog or puppy still in the system.”

A foster home is a temporary home for a puppy that has not yet been adopted and is in danger of being euthanized in the south. The role of a foster is to give the puppy a head start on housetraining, manners and family life, all of which help it to be more easily adopted. Chasin has brought several puppies into local foster homes in the past and says it usually takes from 1 - 14 days for the puppy to find a permanent home in Connecticut.

Fosters naturally love puppies and truly enjoy their “puppy fix” without having to commit for the next fifteen years. When the puppy does find the perfect home, the foster can fully appreciate what a large part they have played in saving that puppy.

“One week in a foster’s life can mean 15 years of a happy life for a shelter puppy.”
