WAC Hosts '80's Dance Party at Shake Shack

WAC hosts "Shake Your Groove: An '80's Dance Party" at Westport's Shake Shack on Thursday, July 26 at 8 p.m. to raise funds for art education in local communities.

A few years ago, I had the honor of interviewing young, talented filmmakers attending Bridge Academy in Bridgeport. They were enrolled in an enrichment program sponsored by The Westport Arts Center and Westport Sunrise Rotary Club and other local organizations. Founded by Westport educator Sandy Lefkowitz, the Bridgeport teens learned a variety of skills, beginning with the film's conception, scriptwriting, production, publicity and, of course, editing. Because of the wide interest in the film club, the program expanded. A few motivated teens received scholarships to participate in a summer film intensive.

Once again, art changed lives.

On Thursday, July 26 the Westport community is invited to support education programs, such as this one, by attending the Westport Arts Center's exciting summer fundraiser, "Shake Your Groove: An 80's Dance Party," at Shake Shack in Westport, beginning at 8 p.m. The fun-filled evening includes dinner, dancing to New England's premier '80's tribute band Orange Crush, interactive art, a silent auction and live art experiences.

WAC's Art Education Committee is filled with a group of highly energetic, committed folks who also happen to know how to plan a good party. Previous fundraisers focusing on themes of '70's music, Andy Warhol and the sultry sounds and ambiance of Latin American Tango were hits with those in attendance.

Along with the Art of Film-making at Bridge Academy, WAC also supports "Connections," a dynamic arts experience for under-served youth in urban charter schools; New Media Lab, courses in photography, animation, and film for aspiring young artists; Special Arts @WAC, an after-school arts program designed for students with special needs; and WAC Gives Back,  artist residencies for hospitalized children.

So, get in the mood to listen to a little Madonna ("Like a Virgin"), Billy Idol ("Dancing With Myself") and David Bowie ("Let's Dance".) Guests are encouraged to pull on their acid wash jeans, tease their hair, get out those shoulder padded shirts and be ready to groove!

Tickets are $80 for a Single Groove; $250 for Love Shack, which includes two tickets and a ‘swag bag’ filled with surprise goodies. For more information, contact WAC at 203-222-7070. Tickets may also be purchased online.
