Calcagni – Carl Ernest Calcagni, age 71, of Westport, passed away on Saturday, February 16, 2013 while on a 50th Wedding Anniversary cruise to Australia.
He was born on January 31, 1942 in Jamaica Estates, New York to the late Carlo and Annette DeSantis Calcagni. Carl grew up in Jamaica Estates, New York. He graduated from Freeport High School in Freeport, New York in 1959.
After high school he attended Pharmacy School at St John’s University in Jamaica where he received a BS in Pharmacy and was a member of Delta Sigma Theta. Carl held numerous positions in his 38-year tenure in the Pharmaceutical Industry. He began his career working for Purdue Fredrick in manufacturing. He spent the majority of his career at Sterling Drug Inc. and rounded out the remainder of his tenure at Bayer Pharmaceuticals (Miles) as VP, Regulatory Affairs before retiring in 2001. Carl started his own regulatory consulting firm where he maintained several high profile pharmaceutical companies as clients.
Carl married Josephine Macari in 1963 in Whitestone, New York. They were happily married for 49 years. Carl was a member of St. Luke Church, United Way and Chairman of the Board, The Bayer Institute for Healthcare Communications. He also received numerous professional awards throughout his career. Carl enjoyed boating, golf, tennis, travel, and spending time with his family.
Carl will be lovingly remembered by his devoted spouse, Josephine, of Westport; his son Carlo Calcagni, and his wife, Barbara, of Manhasset, NY; his daughters, Alessandra Moore, and her husband, Tom, of Fairfield, and Victoria Ponce de Leon, and her husband, Dominic, of Fairfield; his six beautiful grandchildren, Daniela, Carlo, Thomas, Gabriella, Nathaniel, and Brian. Carl was preceded in death by his parents and brother Ralph Calcagni.
Calling hours will be held on Tuesday from 2 to 5 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. in the Lesko & Polke Funeral Home, 1209 Post Road, in Fairfield Center. His Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Wednesday at 10 a.m. directly in St. Luke Church, 84 Long Lots Road, Westport, with interment to follow.
