Cause of Saugatuck Congregational Church Fire Remains Undetermined

The cause of the November 20 structure fire at 245 Post Road East is still a mystery.

The cause of the fire at still remains undetermined at this time, according to Westport Fire Marshal Edward Zygmant. 

Although the main church sanctuary built in 1832 was saved by firefighters, The rear portion of the structure sustained and floor which hampered both firefighting efforts and the following investigation.

The origin and cause investigation was conducted by the Marshals Office, the Detective Bureau and the Connecticut State Fire Marshals Office. A team of fire investigators from independent insurance companies also conducted their own investigation.

After an extensive investigation by all entities involved, the cause of the fire is undetermined. Pending any new information, the file will be closed.
