Driver Arrested for Hitting Telephone Pole, Traffic Signs in Westport

Westport police responded to the area of 132 Bayberry Lane on May 17 to a report of a loud crash.

When arrived they found that the vehicle had gone off the road, sideswiped a telephone pole and damaged two traffic signs, but had left the scene, police said.

Witnesses stated the vehicle fled heading north on Bayberry Lane and the physical evidence led the officers to locate the vehicle 2.2 miles away from the scene, police said.

The vehicle came back registered to 50-year-old Mark Wilkenson, who said he was driving on Bayberry Lane when a deer jumped out in front of him causing him to swerve off the road and hit the pole. He then returned to his house, police said.

Wilkenson was charged with evading responsibility and failure to drive in proper lane. He was taken into custody and later released after posting $1,500 bond. He is due in court May 25.
