Driver Escapes After Car Bursts into Flames on I-95 in Westport

State police, Westport Fire Department, Westport EMS and Westport Police Department all responded to the accident.

 

A car stuck the median on I-95 at about 7:50 p.m. Monday and subsequently burst into flames, according to Westport Fire Department.

“Two engines, a rescue, and command car responded and arriving firefighters found a car that had struck the median and erupted into flames just prior to the Hales Road overpass,” said Westport Fire Department Assistant Chief William Dingee.

The one-car accident occurred between exits 17 and 18 on the northbound side of the highway, which was closed for about five minutes while the fire was extinguished.

“Firefighters worked to extinguish the care fire and to examine the driver until the arrival of Westport EMS,” Dingee said. “The driver was placed on a backboard and into the ambulance for transport to Norwalk Hospital for evaluation.

Two lanes of the highway were kept closed for the duration of the incident creating a significant back up. They were reopened at about 8:30 p.m. when the last fire department vehicle cleared the scene, Dingee said.

After extinguishment the car was removed by Westport Center Service flatbed, according to Dingee.
