Driver Gets DUI Following Car Accident in Westport

When the officer approached the vehicle to speak to the driver, he could immediately smell alcohol on the driver's breath, police said.

 

A Norwalk man was arrested in Westport after he was involved in a motor vehicle accident on Park Street and Saugatuck Avenue at about 8 p.m. Saturday night, according to a police report.

The driver, identified as 40-year-old Steven Bass, had slurred speech and when he stepped out of the vehicle he could not keep his balance, police said.

Bass refused to perform the field sobriety test and was taken into custody. He also refused to submit to a breath test, police said.

Westport police charged Bass with driving under the influence of drugs or alcohol and failure to drive in proper lane, according to the police report. 

Bass was later released after posting a $500 cash bond. He is scheduled to appear in Norwalk Superior Court on November 15.
