Fire Department Responds to Car Fire

A Jetta was fully engulfed today.

The Westport Fire Department responded to a vehicle fire in Parker Harding Plaza Wednesday evening.

Upon arrival, firefighters found a 1994 Volkswagen Jetta's passenger compartment was fully engulfed in flames and a 2007 Lexus RX350 sustained damage due to the close proximity to the burning vehicle, said Assistant Chief Larry Conklin.

The Fire Department responded with two engines and the shift commander's car. The Westport Police Department blocked both entrances to Parker Harding Plaza to make access easier for Fire Department vehicles.

A small quantity of gasoline entered a storm drain and the Department of Environmental Protection and Coast Guard were notified. Firefighters used speedy dry and boom material to absorb the gasoline spill. There were no injuries to firefighters or passengers of the vehicles. The last Fire Department vehicle cleared the scene around 7 p.m.
