Photos: Fish Flop After Interstate 95 Accident

Hundreds of fish flopped along the shoulder of Interstate 95 when the truck transporting them overturned.

Hundreds of live fish were let off the hook  at approximately 6:17 p.m. when the truck transporting them lost control and overturned past exit 17 southbound on Interstate 95. Traffic was backed up for miles.

Westport police and fire units, plus additional units from as far away as Darien, were there in full force moments after the accident. The truck was carrying 2,500 pounds of live fish. Flopping fish were strewn for more than a hundred feet, from where truck rested on the the far right lane all the way to the grassy area bordering the shoulder. All the fish were declared a loss by the Department of Consumer Protection.

A container of liquid oxygen and ten gallons of fuel leaked from the scene of the accident. Firefighters worked to mitigate the spill.

The driver appeared to be uninjured as fish were scooped back into large containers.

If singer/songwriter and hunger social activist Harry Chapin were still alive maybe he would have done a "Sequel" (pun intended) to another one of his famous songs "30,000 Pounds of Bananas" which put Scranton PA on the map. He could call it "2,500 Pounds of Live Fish" and do for Westport what he did for Scranton! ;-)

Even these great photos don't do it justice - I was driving northbound just after it happened, and the fish were literally all over the road - the three travel lanes of I-95 SB. I had to call a fellow commuter who I knew was somewhere behind me to ask him to "check me on this - I might be seeing things, but I think I just saw a whole bunch of fish all over 95!" The fish were covering the entire road in the same fashion as the photo shows them covering the breakdown lane.
