Gas Spill at Gulf

Westport Fire Department cleans up a 3-gallon spill Wednesday afternoon.

The Westport Fire Department responded to a gas spill at the Gulf gas station on Post Road East Wednesday afternoon.

Fire Inspector Nate Gibbons said a woman had filled up her car with gas but the pump continued to spew and would not turn off.

"Gas was spraying all over," he said.

Pump No. 2 was shut down manually but between two and three gallons spilled onto the ground, he said.

The WFD responded at 2:05 p.m. and closed the gas station for about 20 minutes.

By 2:30 p.m., the gas was cleaned up and the fire trucks were leaving the scene.

Gibbons said the department used Speedi-Dri, an oil absorbent clay material that easily soaks up petroleum products.

The pump is now blocked off with caution tape.

Shavon Allen, a sales associate at the gas station, said they would call a repair man to look at the pump today.

No one has had any problems with the pump before, she said.

Gibbons said he would check back with the station for proof the pump was repaired properly.

No one was injured in the incident. Drivers along Post Road East experienced slower traffic on the road while the WFD cleaned up the spill.
