High Fire Danger in Westport During Drought

Although Westport is expected to see some precipitation over the next few days, residents should be vigilant in taking preventative actions towards brush and house fires as the town is currently five to six inches shy of its average rainfall for this time of year, according to Assistant Fire Chief William Dingee.

"Residents should be very fire conscious at this time," Dingee said. "Keep dry growth away from your house if you can. That way, if there is a brush or grass fire, hopefully the fire will not spread to your house if you have removed that fuel."

Residents should not have any open burning brush or leave fires at this time, Dingee said.

Furthermore, Westporters should be careful of where they dispose of their smoking materials, Dingee said. Throwing a cigarette butt in a dry pile of mulch can lead to a problem anytime, but it is especially dangerous during a drought.
