Husband Arrested for Murder Attempt on Round Hill Rd.

Greenwich Police responded to 261 Round Hill Rd. after receiving a 911 call on Tuesday night at about 6:00p.m. about a domestic dispute between a husband and wife. The argument escalated to the point where the  suspect bludgeoned his wife, Diane Demaio, with a baseball bat, according to Greenwich Police. 

The suspect, Michael Demaio, 55, was arrested on the scene without incident and held overnight on a one million dollar bond. He was was charged with Criminal Attempt at Murder and Assault in the First Degree and arraigned in Stamford Superior Court Wednesday morning, according to Greenwich Police public information officer, Lt. Kraig Gray.

The victim was transported to Stamford Hospital for several blunt force injuries and remains in critical condition.

The incident took place on the second floor of the family's mansion on Round Hill Rd. and neighbors did not hear anything, according to Chief Heavey.  

At the time of the incident one family member, the victim's mother, was present. The couple has grown children who were not home at the time of the incident, according to Lt. Gray. 

The investigation is still early and Lt. Gray indicated he does not know the suspect's previous arrests or convictions, if any.

"The Greenwich Police Department does take domestic violence seriously and this was clearly a domestic incident," Gray said. "We do have a dedicated domestic violence unit that is spread out throughout the squad that responds to homes within the town of Greenwich hopefully before it gets to this situation." Gray said the YWCA's domestic violence hotline is a source people can reach out to anonymously.

Chief Heavey emphasized that domestic violence is an unfortunate part of life, and "even in Greenwich we respond over 200 times a year to various types of domestic violence cases. We have an especially trained and equipped team that responds to those."
