Intoxicated Washington Man Interferes With Westport, State Police

Westport police reports: Dec. 22-28.

  • Ian Nichols, 27, of Wenatchee, Washington, was charged Dec. 25 with interfering with an officer and failure to submit to fingerprinting. Officers were assisting state police Troop G at the commuter lot at Exit 42 off of the Merritt Parkway on Weston Road. The call was later determined to be an ambulance call involving a family member of Nichols, however during the investigation, Nichols was extremely belligerent and interfered with the investigation. It was apparent he had been drinking and was heavily intoxicated. He was eventually taken into custody and transported to  where he refused to be fingerprinted. He was later released after posting bond a $10,000 bond.
  • Alexandra Benderoth, 23, of Bridgeport, was charged Dec. 27 with DUI, failure to drive in proper lane and failure to have insurance after officers responded to a report of a vehicle that struck a pole on Riverside Avenue. Officers located the operator, Benderoth, sitting down across the street from her vehicle and immediately detected alcohol on her breath. She failed the field sobriety tests and was taken into custody. She submitted to a urine test and was later released after posting bond.
  • Alan Unger, 45, of Stamford, was charged Dec. 24 with operating under suspension, following too closely and evading responsibility. In two separate complaints, the accused was traveling on Post Road East and “bumped” into two vehicles and did not stop or contact the police. The complainants saw Unger’s license plate and an officer located the vehicle being driven by Unger. There was no visible damage to the two vehicles that he “bumped” into; however, the vehicle he was operating had significant front end damage and driver’s license was found to be under suspension. He was taken into custody and later released after posting bond.
  • Sarah Yeager, 22, of 6 Nutmeg Lane, Westport, was charged with DUI Dec. 24. An officer observed Yeager’s vehicle, a black Honda CRV, traveling northbound on Riverside Avenue on its front right rim as the tire had apparently been torn off. Once stopped, the officer detected a strong odor of an alcoholic beverage on the Yeager’s breath. She stated she hit a curb on the way home. A closer inspection of the front right wheel revealed that the tire had shredded off of the rim and there was extensive damage to the rim. It was not determined exactly what she struck. Further, there was damage to the front right quarter panel and bumper area. She refused to take the field sobriety tests and was taken into custody. She submitted to a urine test. She was released after posting bond.
  • Joel Avila, 31, of Bridgeport, was charged Dec. 27 with second-degree failure to appear. During the course of a motor vehicle stop for multiple motor vehicle charges, Avila was found to have a warrant for failure to appear stemming from a DUI arrest by Norwalk Police. He was also charged with several motor vehicle charges from Westport Police. He was unable to post bond and was transported to Norwalk Superior Court Dec. 28 for arraignment.
  • Sean Muldowney, 45, of Milford, was charged Dec. 27 with second-degree failure to appear. Muldowney was stopped on Wilton Road for not having a front registration plate on the vehicle he was operating. He had a warrant for failure to appear from Ridgefield stemming from motor vehicle charges. He was taken into custody and later released after posting bond. He was also charged with various motor vehicle charges from Westport Police.
  • Cesar Yepes-Escobar, 31, of Bridgeport, was charged Dec. 22 with two counts of sixth-degree larceny after he turned himself in to the Westport Police Department. The warrants stem from two separate incidents at Coleytown Middle School where he was employed as a custodian. He was released on a promise to appear in court for both charges.
