Intruder Enters Manitou Road Residence While Homeowners Are Sleeping

Burglar startles sleeping homeowners; runs off into Longshore golf course; police investigating

The following arrest information was provided by the Westport Police Department. It does not indicate convictions.

Westport Police are investigating a nighttime burglary that occurred at 20 Manitou Road at about 1:40 a.m. Sunday, July 24, while the homeowners were sleeping.

According to police the homeowners were awakened by the sounds of the outside bedroom door opening. The homeowners reported that an individual with a flashlight then entered the bedroom. Upon startling the homeowners, the individual exited the home, fleeing towards the Longshore Golf Course, which borders the homeowner’s property.

After calling the police, the homeowners reportedly observed a full size sedan-style vehicle slowly drive past the home in an easterly direction. No further description of the vehicle was available.

The intruder was described as approximately 6 feet 3 inches tall, wearing a white or light colored polo type shirt and dark colored pants. The homeowner was unable to determine the intruder’s gender or race. The police report does not indicate how entry was gained.

Officers on patrol checked the perimeter of the house and the surrounding area. In addition a K-9 unit from Monroe responded to the scene. Police said the K-9 unit was deployed in the area of the back bedroom door and began to track. The track continued in a southerly direction across the rear yard into the Longshore golf course, ending in a parking area near the Longshore Marina.

Police said area towns were advised of the incident, which is being investigated by the Westport Police Detective Bureau.

The police report does not indicate whether any items were reported missing from the home.
