Man Charged with DUI in Westport

A Fairfield man was charged with driving under the influence in Westport early Thursday after he was reportedly observed driving erratically on Compo Road South.

A Fairfield man was charged with driving under the influence in Westport early Thursday after he was reportedly observed driving erratically on Compo Road South.

Westport's dispatch received reports of a vehicle traveling erratically on the road. Officers on patrol spotted a car matching the description at a gas station at the intersection of Post Road East and Hillspoint Road.

The operator of the vehicle pulled out of the gas station and headed westbound on Post Road East without turning on his car's lights (it was close to midnight), according to the report. Police said the car was traveling at a high rate of speed.

The responding officer followed the car and reported the vehicle was weaving in and out of its proper lane, according to the report. The officer stopped the vehicle at on the Sherwood Island Connector.

The officer detected the odor of alcohol on the driver's breath while speaking with him, according to the report, and noted the man's eyes were glassy and his speech slurred.

The man reportedly admitted to drinking two beers. He refused to perform field sobriety tests and was arrested.

The driver -- identified as Edward Cord, 41, of South Benson Place -- was charged with driving under the influence of drugs and/or alcohol, failure to have lights lit, and failure to drive right. He was held in lieu of a $500 bond and is scheduled to appear in court on June 27. 

The suspect's license was seized and held by Westport Police.
