A Trumbull man was charged with driving under the influence Saturday in Westport.

An officer noticed a black Audi coupe traveling southbound on Riverside Avenue without any of the vehicle's headlights illuminated, according to the arrest report.

The officer initiated a motor vehicle stop at the intersection of Imperial Avenue and Keyser Road. Upon speaking with the driver, the officer detected a "distinct and pronounced" odor of an alcoholic beverage on the man's breath, according to the report.

The driver -- identified as Theodore Kelhoffer, 24, of Lafayette Drive in Trumbull -- told the officer he had consumed four beers when police asked how much he had to drink that evening, according to the report. Kelhoffer reportedly told police he was heading from Viva Zapata to a friend's house.

Police said Kelhoffer's eyes were red and glassy, his speech slow and slurred, and that he failed to perform field sobriety tests to standard. Kelhoffer's vehicle was towed from the scene. He was transported to police headquarters, where he consented to a breath test.

According to the report, Kelhoffer's blood alcohol content level was more than twice the legal limit. He was charged with driving under the influence, as well as failure to illuminate his vehicle's headlights.

Kelhoffer was released after posting a $500 bond and is scheduled to appear at Norwalk Superior Court on June 3.
