Man Charged With Stealing Motorcycle After Engine Fire in Westport

The man was charged after an investigation revealed the bike was stolen.

 

A Stamford man was recently arrested for stealing a motorcycle after .

Police eventually caught up with the man two blocks away from where he left the bike in the rear parking lot at 111 Saugatuck Avenue. A subsequent check of the vehicle identification number located on the motorcycle’s engine showed that the bike had been stolen in Danbury in August 2010.

Westport police charged 26-year-old David Lionetti, of Stamford, with fifth-degree larceny (of vehicle parts) after he turned himself into Westport Police Headquarters on a warrant Thursday afternoon.

In April Lionetti was charged with evading responsibility, misuse of plate, first-degree reckless endangerment and third-degree criminal mischief.

Lionetti said he was traveling southbound on I-95 and his motorcycle began to smoke, according to police.  He drove his motorcycle off of I-95 exit 17, directly across Saugatuck Avenue, where police said he took the plate off of the motorcycle and called a friend to pick him up.
