Multiple Stolen Vehicles and Police Pursuit Lead to School Lockdown

Westport Police Department Captain and Detective Commander Vincent J. Penna issued the following news release:

 

"At 10:29 a.m. today Westport Police received a 911 call from the homeowner at 29 Blue Ribbon Drive Westport stating that as she was returning home she observed an unknown vehicle parked in her driveway and her second vehicle being driven away from her residence by an unknown black male. The complainant then followed her vehicle while relaying the location to police.

Responding units began a search of the area. At 10:35 a.m. units observed the stolen vehicle on the Sherwood Island Connector and attempted to stop it. The operator refused to stop for officers and proceeded onto I-95 Northbound in an attempt to elude the pursuing officers. Between exits 19 and 20 patrol vehicles lost sight of the stolen vehicle and again began searching the surrounding areas with the assistance of Fairfield Police.

A short time later officer from the Fairfield Police Department located the vehicle which again engaged officers in a high-speed pursuit on local roads reentering Westport on Greens Farm Rd. The vehicle again eluded police in the Greens Farms area of Town.

At 12:50 p.m. a Westport Patrol officer checking the area where the vehicle was last seen observed the stolen vehicle parked in a rear lot of Greens Farms Academy which is located at 35 Beachside Ave. Greens Farms Academy is a private school which was in session at the time the vehicle was found.

Based on the proximity of the vehicle to the school a lock down was initiated while officers assisted by multiple K-9 units searched the grounds and school buildings. This was done in order to ensure the safety of the students and faculty while Police personnel were on school grounds actively searching for the suspect.

Further investigation revealed that a third vehicle had been stolen from the school grounds and used by the suspect to flee the area. All incidents are currently under investigation by the Westport Police Department. If anyone has any information regarding these incidents please call the Westport Detective Bureau @ 203-341-6080."
