Off-Duty Officer Assists in Westport DUI Arrest

Police said the drivers' speech was slurred and somewhat rambling.

 

An off-duty police officer observed a someone driving erratically and almost cause an accident on Post Road East at about 7:45 p.m. Tuesday.

The driver, identified as 36-year-old William Lyons, of Westport, was unable to stay in his lane while traveling on Post Road East, police said.

Marked patrol units arrived at the parking lot of 1265 Post Road East where Lyons had pulled into and officers detected alcohol on his breath after speaking with him, police said.  His speech was slurred and somewhat rambling and his eyes were glassy, according to police. 

Lyons failed the field sobriety tests and was taken into custody. He submitted to a breath test with the following results: 0.0804 and 0.0802, police said.

Westport police charged Lyons, of 5 Canal Park, with operating under the influence of drugs or alcohol, failure to drive right, and failure to drive in proper lane. He was released on a $500 surety bond and is due in Norwalk Superior Court September 20.
