Police ID Victims in Fatal I-95 Accident in Westport

Victims identified as Terrance Bernard, 46, and Savannah Wakely, 25, both of Woonsocket, RI, according to a report on CTNow.com.

State police have reportedly identified the two people who were killed in the as Terrance Bernard, 46, and Savannah Wakely, 25, both of Woonsocket, RI, according to a report on CTNow.com.

As reported on Westport Patch the rollover accident occurred on I-95 northbound just south of the exit 19 at about 3:30 a.m. Sunday.

Bernard and Wakely, who were both passengers in the car, were pronounced dead at the scene, state police said.

The driver, Jamain Allen, 32, of Bridgeport, and another passenger, Jennifer Shaver, 27, of Bridgeport, were transported to St. Vincent's Hospital in Bridgeport for treatment of injuries, according to the CTNow.com report.

Police said the 2005 Nissan Altima was in the left lane when it struck a median guard rail, veered across the highway and “went over the guardrail continuing down a steep embankment through thick overgrowth and trees for approximately 100 feet before coming to rest on its roof.”

“The driver of the vehicle was sitting on the guardrail and was immediately treated by Westport EMS and AMR Ambulance and transported to the hospital,” Fairfield Fire Department Assistant Chief Stephen B. Curry said in a press release.

One of the survivors reportedly had to be extricated from the vehicle.

“Once the doors were removed the patient was removed onto a backboard and into a stokes basket,” Curry said in the release. “A mechanical advantage rope rigging system was put into place that was used to haul the patient up the embankment. The patient was loaded into the ambulance and transported by AMR to the hospital.The two remaining bodies were then extricated and removed up the embankment to the roadway and secured to await the arrival of the State Medical Examiner.”

Firfighters from both and Fairfield responded to the scene. State police are reportedly investigating the accident.
