Man Runs Off With Bags of Jewelry in Westport

At about 11 a.m. Monday the Westport Police Department received a phone call from an alarm company stating they had received a panic alarm from Mikol & Co. on the second floor of 60 Main Street.

 

An undetermined amount of jewelry was stolen Monday in Westport's .

Just 30 minutes after the store had opened for business, the alarm company stated that the owner of  was reporting a man had come in the store and walked off with jewelry, according to Westport Police Captain Sam Arciola.

The store owner reported to officers that she was working in her store when the suspect entered the business and took the two bags containing her store jewelry and then ran from the scene, according to Arciola. The Main Street jewelry store is similar to the ) in that it is a second floor entrance and you have to ring a bell to enter. Both jewelers had a surveillance camera at the store entrance at the time of the theft.

Responding officers and detectives were unable to locate the suspect who was described as being a white male, 5 feet 10 inches tall, in his 40’s, wearing a blue shirt, grey pants, carrying plastic bags stolen from the store, Arciola said.

The Detective Bureau is working with the store owner to determine the amount of jewelry stolen.

The Westport Police Department is asking anyone who was in the area of Main Street at the time of the larceny and may have witnessed this person, to contact the Westport Police Department at 203-341-6000. 

Following December's jewelry store robbery and homicide, , particularly people that enter the store just before closing time. They look to see if the potential customer is actually looking for something or if they are wandering around. Store managers have advised their clerks to take precautions and be wary of nervous customers. One jewelery store clerk stressed the importance of knowing who is in the store at all times.

Mikol & Co. sells a variety of rings, wedding bands, bracelets, necklaces, earrings, charms, pendants, lockets and pins that are designed using diamonds and gemstones. In addition to selling jewelry, the store also provides comprehensive jewelry repair services to customers.
