String of Accidents on I-95 in Norwalk Sends Seven to Hospital

All four accidents reportedly occurred within a 1 mile stretch of highway between the Yankee Doodle Bridge and the Westport town line.

Seven people were reportedly transported to the hospital with injuries as a result of four separate motor vehicle accidents that occurred between 1:50 and 5:15 a.m. Friday on I-95 northbound in Norwalk.

According to a report from the , all four accidents occurred within a 1 mile stretch of highway between the Yankee Doodle Bridge and the Westport town line. I-95 was reportedly shut down several times as police investigated.

Deputy Chief Edward Prescott of the Norwalk Fire Department reported that emergency workers performed a total of five extrications as a result of the accidents. The assisted with two of the accidents. AMR ambulance and Darien EMS also assisted.
 
The first accident, which occurred at about 1:50 a.m. near the Westport town line, involved two cars and a tractor trailer, according to the report. Emergency responders on arrival found one of the cars pinned between the the tractor trailer and the center guard rail, facing the wrong way. The operator and lone occupant of that vehicle was extricated by the Westport Fire Department. The other car had struck the rear of the tractor trailer and ended up in the breakdown lane. The driver and lone occupant of that vehicle was also extricated and both drivers who were transported to Norwalk Hospital.

The second accident, which occurred in the area of Exit 16, involved an SUV which rear-ended a tractor trailer-style dump truck, according to the report. The driver was extricated by both Norwalk and Westport firefighters working both sides of the car. The extrication took about 30 minutes due to the type of collision and the driver being pinned under the dash board, according to the report. The driver was transported to Norwalk Hospital with possible life threatening injuries, the report states.

The third accident occurred on the Yankee Doodle Bridge, also near Exit 16. According to the report, a car "spun-out" in the middle of the highway, whereupon two other vehicles struck it. Norwalk firefighters worked for 15 minutes to extricate two occupants from the car which had spun-out. Both were transported to Norwalk Hospital. Two young males from one of the other two vehicles were also reportedly transported, according to the report.

The fourth accident occurred on the Yankee Doodle Bridge while police were investigating the second accident, the report states. Police had reportedly closed I-95 Northbound and were diverting traffic off Exit 16 when a driver plowed into the back of a car, sending it into the rear of a tractor trailer. The female driver of the car was reportesdly transported to the hospital with minor injuries. Firefighters had to clean up a small oil spill as a result of the accident, the report states.
