Transformer Fire Erupts Near Exit 17

Some surrounding roads were closed or limited to one lane.

Police report that the roads have been cleared and Connecticut Light and Power says that all power has been restored to Westport.

A transformer fire at the base of the Interstate 95 northbound on-ramp forced the closure of some surrounding roads at approximately 5:30 p.m. Wednesday.

Police reported that the transformer exploded. The incident was near the corner of Saugatuck Avenue and Charles Street.

Connecticut Light and Power reports that 149 Westport customers are without electricity, but how much of that was caused by the transformer fire and not the weather is uncertain. At 2 p.m. today, there were more than 400 outages reported in the Westport/Norwalk area.
