Two Injured in Fire at Baker Avenue Home

A fire in the basement of a Baker Avenue home resulted in significant water, fire and smoke damage as well as injuries Monday morning, according to a statement released by Assistant Chief Michael Kronick of the Westport Fire Department.

At 8:41 a.m., the department responded to the reported smoke in the basement at 16 Baker Ave, according to Kronick. Three engines, a rescue truck and shift commander responded to the initial call and, upon arrival, heavy smoke was visible from the front and right side of the house. A second alarm was sounded for a working structure fire bring the fourth Westport engine and ladder truck along with an engine and ladder truck from Norwalk Fire Department.

Firefighters encountered a heavy smoke condition throughout the house and a fire was found in the finished basement. Firefighters were able to use one hose line to extinguish the fire and prevent it from extending throughout the house. Two occupants were transported to the hospital for treatment.

A total of 27 firefighters responded to the fire, which took 20 minutes to bring under control.  The cause of the fire is under investigation by the Westport Fire Marshal’s Office, according to the release.
