Westport FD Extinguishes Blaze at Main Street Nursery

A wood drying kiln in the rear storage area of the greenhouse at Daybreak Nurseries caught fire Friday evening, which initiated a response from all Westport Firefighters.

Firefighters responded to 500 Main Street after receiving a 911 call at about 5:30 p.m., according to Westport Fire Department Assistant Chief Larry Conklin.

The first arriving firefighters encountered flames burning through the roof in the back of the nursery complex.  Firefighters stretched a hose line to the building and we able to contain and extinguish the fire and prevent it from further spreading, Conklin said.

The fire was determined to be an accident by the Westport Fire Marshal’s office. The incident was placed under control at about 6 p.m.

All of Westport’s on duty firefighters responded to the fire, as well as an engine company from the Wilton Fire Department as part of our automatic mutual aid agreement, Conklin said.

Fairfield Fire Department reported to Westport Fire Headquarters to provide coverage. No civilians or firefighters were injured while fighting the fire, according to Conklin.
