Westport Firefighters Remove Truck Stuck Under Bridge

Road was closed and trains were slowed as firefighters removed a portion of the truck.

A Penske moving truck got stuck under the Saugatuck Avenue Railroad bridge Wednesday morning and was removed by the Westport Fire Department.

According to fire personnel, the truck became stuck at approximately 8:23 a.m. and the road was completely closed until approximately 9:10 a.m. A slow down of 15 m.p.h. was placed on Track 3 for the duration of the incident so firefighters were able to work above the truck.

Firefighters had to cut a portion off the top of the truck to disentangle it from the bridge structure. Once the top of the truck was cut it was removed from the bridge with the assistance of a tow truck, according to Assistant Fire Chief Larry Conklin.

Westport Fire responded with one engine, one rescue and a command car. Metro North had their representatives on scene along with Westport Police.

“As a reminder to all truck operators know the height of your vehicle and take note of the bridge height restrictions prior to passing under them,” said Conklin.
