Westport Man Arrested for Having Weapon in Vehicle

Although the man was still arrested, it was later determined that the gun was an air soft or BB gun that had the orange tip broken off, police said.

Westport police charged 21-year-old Cody Ropiak, of 436 Riverside Avenue, with possession of a weapon in a vehicle after he was stopped early Monday morning, police said.

Ropiak was stopped because the vehicle he was driving had only one functioning headlight, according to police.

Once stopped, the officer saw a black handle to a gun sticking out from under a small duffle bag in the rear of the vehicle, police said. It was later determined that the gun was an air soft or BB gun that had the orange tip broken off. It appeared that a black magic marker was used to darken the writing on the gun in order to make the gun look more like a real firearm, police said.

Ropiak was taken into custody and later released after posting a $1,500 surety bond. He is due in court on October 18.
