Westport police initiated a traffic stop early Thursday morning after the driver made a turn on red when not permitted to do so, according to a police report.
Once stopped, the officer could smell “a strong odor of an alcoholic beverage on his breath,” the report stated. When the driver exited the vehicle, he was unsteady on his feet, police said.
The driver failed the field sobriety tests and was taken into custody. He refused to submit to a breath test, police said.
Westport police charged 29-year-old Chad Whited, of 17 Owenoke Parkway, Westport, with operating under the influence of drugs or alcohol, failure to obey control signal and following too closely.
Whited was released on a $500 cash bond. He is due in Norwalk Superior Court on October 29.
