Westport Man Charged for "Yankee Stadium Dirt Scam" Wanted in California for Grand Larceny

The Westport resident was held on multiple bonds adding up to $315,000 and is expected to be extradited to California following his arraignment March 7 in State Superior Court in Norwalk, police said.

 

The Westport Police Department received a letter from the Healdsburg Police Department in California that stated they held an active extraditable arrest warrant for 53-year-old Mark Hayward, a fugitive from justice, police said.

In January 2012, after selling what he claimed was dirt from the original Yankee Stadium.

The letter from Californian authorities requested that the Westport Police Department pick up and extradite Hayward to California on grand larceny charges, according to an arrest report. Hayward allegedly scammed a Healdsburg woman out of more than $50,000.

Hayward, of 2 Conte Place, Westport, was charged with being a fugitive from justice on February 22 at about 6:30 a.m. He is due in State Superior Court in Norwalk March 7, police said.

His bond was set at $250,000, with an additional $75,000 bond set on him from the State of California, police said.
