A one-car accident occurred after a driver reportedly lost control of his vehicle and crashed into a tree at about 3:30 a.m. Friday, police said.
The man told officers that he tried driving the vehicle away, but the damage was significant and was unable to do so, according to the police report. During the conversation, officers could smell alcohol on the driver's breath, police said.
The driver failed the field sobriety test and was taken into custody. He refused the breath test, according to police reocrds.
Westport police charged 21-year-old Bennett Sacks, of Fairfield, with driving under the influence of alcohol, failure to drive in the proper lane, and evading responsibility, according to the arrest report.
Sacks later posted a $500 cash bond and was released. He is due in Norwalk Superior Court December 3.
