Westport PD: Man Charged With DUI After Nearly Striking Curb

Westport police reports: March 15-19.

  • Don Liu, 50, of 8 Joanne Circle, Westport, was charged March 15 with operating under the influence, failure to drive right and improper turn. An officer observed the Liu make a right turn onto Bridge Street from Riverside Avenue from the left lane, according to a police report. As the vehicle turned onto Bridge Street, it almost struck the right curb, police said. The officer followed the vehicle further on Bridge Street and twice Liu crossed the double yellow lines and once stopped, the officer detected an odor of an alcoholic beverage on his breath, police said. Liu failed the field sobriety tests and was taken into custody. He submitted to the breath test with the following results: .086 and .077. He posted bond and was later released.
  • Leigh Rhett, 54, of 39 Imperial Avenue, Westport, was charged March 16 with second-degree failure to appear after being taken into custody at his residence on a warrant.  The original charges were not specified in the report. He was later released after posting $2,500 bond.
