Westport Police Promotes New Captain

John A. Calka was promoted to Captain at a ceremony held at Westport Town Hall Friday.

Calka was sworn in to his new rank by First Selectman Gordon F. Joseloff in a ceremony attended by family, members of the and and other town employees, according to a press release from Westport Police Department. Captain Calka lives in Darien with his wife Lois and is the father of two daughters

     Captain Calka is a graduate of the University of Connecticut with a Bachelor of Science in Natural Resources Management as well as Middlesex Community College (General Studies – Law Enforcement). He joined the Westport Police Department in October 1979. Captain Calka was promoted to the rank of Desk Officer in January 1984, Detective in 1993, Sergeant in 2007, and Lieutenant in 2009. Captain Calka was the Fairfield County Regional Intelligence Liaison Officer to the Connecticut Intelligence Center from 2005 through 2009. He is a member of the Southwestern Regional Crisis Intervention Team and supervises the Westport officers assigned to that team. Captain Calka is a past-president of the Fairfield County Detective Conference.

     Captain Calka fills the vacancy left by the promotion in October of Deputy Chief Foti Koskinas. He will continue his assignment as a patrol shift commander in addition to his new duties as Staff Commander pending an upcoming promotional process to fill the lieutenant position.
