Election Audit Underway

Votes From Westport's 7th District Being Counted

A state mandated audit of election results from Westport's 7th Voting District began Friday morning in Town Hall. The audit is verifying the results of three races from the town's Nov. 3 election: First Selectman, Board of Education and Zoning Board of Appeals.

Today's audit is one of 60 ordered by Secretary of State Susan Bysiewicz, who randomly chose from the 597 voting precincts used  in the statewide election. Voting in Westport's 7th District occurred in the Long Lots Elementary School gym.

The audit, which is overseen by the town's two registrars of voters, requires the participation of eight paid residents. Democratic Registrar Nita S. Cohen said it will cost Westport $8,000.

Results of the 60 audits will be submitted to the University of Connecticut, which will prepare a report describing any discrepancies identified. The report will be presented to Bysiewicz, who will submit it to the state's Election Enforcement Commission.

The audit in Town Hall is expected to be completed late Friday afternoon or early evening. Westport Patch will report the results when they become available.
