Landmark Fairfield Lighthouse Damaged During Superstorm Sandy to be Renovated

Renovations could cost $1 million

A $500,000 to $1 million federal renovation project to the landmark Penfield Reef Lighthouse damaged during Superstorm Sandy is expected to begin late summer, the Fairfield Citizen reports.

The 140-year-old lighthouse, which is located on the south side of Black Rock Harbor, was battered during Sandy and repairs are needed to make it safe for Coast Guard personnel to maintain the still active beacon for navigation in Long Island Sound, the Citizen reports.

The Coast Guard used to man the lighthouse until it became automated in 1971.
