[Editor's note: The following letter to the editor was submitted by Susan Staub.]

Dear Editor:

I would like to see Jeannie Smith maintain her seat on the Westport Board of Education and believe that once you get to know her, you will agree with me.

Jeannie’s skill set provides a unique perspective to the Board, truly making her the “Educator for the Board of Education.” She worked as an elementary school teacher and an academic interventionist in Westchester County, NY for over 10 years, and was an educational consultant in Manhattan before moving to Westport in 2008.  I believe her experience in the classroom as well as her expertise in curriculum development, assessments and standards-based instruction, allows her to convey to the Board how important issues impact the classroom on a day-to-day basis.

As a Board of Education member this past year, she had the opportunity to experience firsthand the degree to which we Westporters are committed to our children and to the future.  Whether it is through the proposed curriculum changes as part of Westport 2025 and the Common Core Standards initiatives, or approving the school budget while achieving our schools’ goals, Jeannie is committed to providing the children of Westport the best educational experience and opportunity to be successful in the 21st century.

In the future, I believe Jeannie will continue to advocate continuous improvement of our curriculum in a fiscally responsible manner and work to ensure the safety of our schools, while maintaining a welcoming and enriching learning environment.

Jeannie and her husband Dave and have four children between the ages of two and seven. She looks forward not only to serving on the Westport Board of Education but also being actively involved in the Westport Public Schools for many years to come.

Please consider voting for Jeannie Smith, the educator for the Westport Board of Education.
