P&Z Says 'Yes' to Community Gardens, 'No' to Boat Locker Rezoning

The commission met Thursday for a work session.

At Thursday's Planning and Zoning Commission meeting, commissioners voted unanimously to approve the special permit and site plan for the Westport Community Gardens expansion on Hyde Lane.

The gardens will contain 58 plots and allow up to 130 gardeners.

The commission also voted 5-1 to deny a request by the Boat Locker to rezone a portion of the Post Road East property from residential to commercial.

The commission voted against the Boat Locker's request because it said a rezoning there would allow expansion of commercial uses within a residential zone, which is inconsistent with the elements of the town's 2007 Plan for Conservation and Development. The commission also said "the applicant failed to make a compelling case for expanding into the residential zone."

Commissioner Howard Lathrop opposed the decision. Commissioner Catherine Walsh was absent.
