Q&A: New RTM Member Paul Lebowitz

The Representative Town Meeting welcomed Paul Lebowitz to their ranks at Tuesday's meeting.

The Representative Town Meeting has the power to set budgets worth millions, change the town's laws and put the final stamp of approval - or rejection - on all fiscal decisions pertaining to taxpayers' dollars.

On Tuesday, the Paul Lebowitz joined the town's legislative body to fill a vacancy in District 6 , who earlier this year. After his swearing in, he answered a few questions.

Can you tell me a little about yourself. What's your professional background?

In April 1996, I opened the doors of Westport Mortgage LLC. Serving as its managing member, I am both an originator and a business owner. With over 15 years experience in the mortgage industry, I have consistently maintained a diverse local client-base.

Much of my business in Westport comes from customers who are either purchasing or refinancing. I have built a strong customer base using referrals from strong local Realtor relationships, and a network of attorneys and CPA’s.

I hold membership in several industry associations and am active with the local Realtor boards. On weekends I can be found enjoying a round of golf at Longshore.

Why did you want to join the Representative Town Meeting?

Most people I talk to in District 6 are extremely proud of the quality of education offered in the local school system, and the natural beauty of our town’s parks and beaches. My neighbors are keenly interested in matters that affect that quality of life.

I joined the RTM to connect my friends and neighbors to their local town government. Everybody wants to know what is going on in Town Hall, so I will strive to keep those lines of communication open to their elected officials.

So you had your first meeting already. Have any veteran members offered advice about how to best serve your constituents?

No, the only advice I received so far was which auditorium seats were reserved for whom… I guess there is “tradition” at all levels of government.

The RTM ultimately has the final say on the town's multi-million dollar budget. How you plan to tackle dilemmas that might not be black and white?

Good question, do you have any suggestions? Just kidding. I have no “plan” per se. Just two ears, which I intend to use.

What are you most looking forward to on the RTM?

Getting to know my local government and all those who serve it…we really seem to have a good group in this town. And shaking the hands of every one of my district’s people.
