Speakers included Staples High School senior Devin Graber and First Selectman Gordon F. Joseloff.

Joseloff commented on the town's recent elections, which were made possible because of sacrifices military men and women have made for generations.

"We are here to honor them and those still serving abroad and at home," Joseloff said. "Last week, we were horribly reminded that the dangers to those in uniform do not only come on foreign soil. It was a very sobering reminder.

"Last month, I had the honor of participating in a salute to World War II veterans at Bedford Middle School," Joseloff continued. "It was a very moving and emotional tribute to our friends and neighbors who many years ago endured the horrors of the battlefield, the challenges in the skies and on the ocean. ... Altogether we identified more than 270 World War II veterans presently in Westport."

Joseloff also spoke of those who are still "putting themselves in harms way."

"Last Friday night, I attended a farewell party at the VFW Post for Nick Marsan who is getting ready to deploy with his National Guard unit to Afghanistan. Nick is a firefighter with the Westport Fire Department," he said. "His fellow firefighter Lt. Tom Richmond also was called up for active service. We are deeply indebted to both of them and all who serve."

Some of Westport's youngest residents agreed.

"Veterans Day means to us, like, respecting the people who fought wars in the past," 10-year-old Joshua Tilton said after the services.

"It means respect people and honor them and say thank you for serving our country," echoed his brother David, 9.

The services included a placing of the memorial wreath, Paula Castiglia singing "God Bless America" and the playing of Taps by Staples High School Buglers Ole Vaagen and Cameron Bruce.
