Jonathan Steinberg: Our Highly Accessible State Rep.

A letter to the editor from Westport resident Doris J. Levinson. "Jonathan Steinberg: Our Highly Accessible State Rep."

To the editor:

I’ve lived at the same house in Westport for over 40 years and Jonathan Steinberg is the only candidate for State Representative that I’ve met at my front door where he’s come—twice—to say hello and ask for my support. Even given our neighborly introduction, I’ve been impressed by how visible and accessible he’s been during his first two years in office. I’ve worked along with him as a volunteer at the Westport Library’s mammoth book sale in July, and seen him handing out programs at the Levitt Pavilion when I came to attend a concert. As co-founder of the Westport Cinema Initiative, he’s been a strong supporter for a new movie theater to promote the arts and liven up downtown Westport.

Beyond his active role locally, he’s been working hard for us in Hartford. Recently, I read about his key role in getting approval of a $500,000 state grant to help finance the Levitt’s renovation and how he’s fought to protect open space and Long Island Sound as a member of the Connecticut state legislature’s bipartisan Shoreline Preservation Task Force. He’s known to be open to our ideas and concerns about issues, as was evident in Dan Woog’s blog entitled “Steinberg at the Shore,” where Woog advised anyone who couldn’t attend a public hearing on the shoreline to just “Call Steinberg” with their input.

Yesterday Jonathan Steinberg came to my door in his campaign for a second term. This time we talked about education and what it takes for kids to succeed—a strong interest of mine—and he was great listener. I’ll vote for him enthusiastically in November. Westport is lucky to have a State Representative of his energy, vision and dedication.
