Staples Senior Logan Rosen Honored by Westport Sunrise Rotary

Logan Rosen, a Staples senior, was honored by Sunrise Rotary for his redesigns of Staples website and for his contributions to the broader community's understanding of technology

Westport Sunrise Rotary honored Logan Rosen, a Staples senior, as Young Student Entrepreneur of the Month on Friday for his exceptional contributions to his school and to his community beyond Staples.

The Reverend John Branson, Rector of Christ & Holy Trinity Church, introduced Rosen.

Branson cited the student for “giving back to the Staples community” by redesigning websites for the school, the school's Guidance Department and for Inklings, Staples' student newspaper.

Branson said Rosen gave the guidance site a new look and feel and noted that he strengthened the Internship program pages.   His work led to an increased number of internships and attracted more students to the program.

He improved Inklings' site by “making a static site dynamic.”  Its attractive site offers the look and feel of a well done city newspaper, offering easy access to its contents.  It leaves the non-Staples visitor wowed by the site itself and the breadth of student contributions to it.

In August Rosen gave a talk entitled “Technological Integration in Daily Life” as a part of the Westport Library's TEDx program.  He targeted an adult population who have a timid view of things digital.  Rosen explained devices in terms of how they can be used to make life simpler and easier and to help save money, rather than by function.

The TED movement began in 1984 to share “ideas worth spreading” in Technology, Education and Design.  At the global level, TED conferences offer some of “the world's most fascinating thinkers” the opportunity to share their ideas in person and have their talks recorded for on demand online access.

The Westport Library sponsored its own TEDx conference, featuring four Staples seniors along with videos of two global thinkers.

Rosen, Branson told the group, designed his first website when he was five.  Two years ago he wrote an article comparing three software applications that enhance learning, teaching and research based on their value to Staples.  A University of Michigan professor cited the article as a contribution to that body of knowledge.

Presenting the award, Branson called Rosen the “fulfillment of our dream as Rotarians for his 'Service Above Self,'” the motto of Rotary International.

Rosen thanked the club and said developing these sites is a “personal passion,” and that he “enjoyed giving back.”  He called TEDx, a “great experience,” and “enjoyed educating the community in how to integrate technology into daily life.”
