Amid Cold Snap, Fewer Children at Bus Stops

Officials say fewer bus riders means more congestion during school drop-off.

With the current cold spell hovering over Fairfield, town streets and corners may look deserted—and school bus stops are no exception.

Officials with First Student, the busing company that takes local youngsters to and from Fairfield schools, say they have seen a steep decline in the number of kids waiting on the corner each morning.

"We usually see it during the winter," said Daniel, a dispatcher with First Student in the Fairfield region.

But this winter has proved more gelid than past seasons, with temperatures slipping into single-digit territory, and "real feel" temperatures reaching into the negatives, according to the National Weather Service.

And the early morning—with blustery weather and little sun—may be the worst time to stand idle while waiting for a bus.

Daniel said local routes do not change as a result, but noted more cars at the schools can cause congestion.

"Traffic is an issue," he said.

The number of children riding the bus returns to a normal level each spring, he added.

Why is it the panel for this event does not include a single advocate for gun-owners' rights? WithRead More all due respect to Chief McNamara, why does the panel no include a person who can speak to gun safety from a gun-owning civilian's perspective? ML, you claim that the assembled folks "do not offer judgements about gun ownership" but they are not including a single voice that can offer perspective on gun ownership. I have been to "education" sessions sponsored by Meg's March for Change and they are one-sided indoctrinations into gun control advocacy. >>>> I was in Hartford for the public hearings in January when both Meg and March co-founder Nancy gave their personal testimonies and they all but threatened the legislators on the panel with election day retribution for all those who did not tow the gun-control line of thinking (i.e. March and CAGV). To suggest that Meg "does not offer judgements" is fallacious and disingenuous.
