Planning for college and feeling a bit daunted by the process?

The Jewish Family Service of Stamford, New Canaan and Darien will host agroup of college admissions deans at the Stamford Jewish Community Center on Thursday, March 13 at 7:30 p.m. for its annual College Ahead! program for area parents and teens.

The program will focus on the essential elements of the college planning process, with Claire Friedlander, JFS college consultant, moderating the panel discussion. JFS College Ahead! is co-sponsored by Jewish Family Service and the Stamford JCC. The free event is open to the public.

The admissions deans scheduled to appear include Greg Zaiser, vice president of Admission and Financial Planning, Elon University, NC; Stefano Papaleo, Director of Undergraduate Admission, Lynn University, FL; Mary Ellen Anderson, Director of Admissions, Indiana University, IN and Catherine Capolupo, Vice President of Enrollment Management at Roger Williams University, RI.

Each panelist will speak about life and activities on their respective campuses, and give an overview of their institutions. From a national perspective, the speakers also will address the important college admissions issues facing applicants.

Some topics the panelists will discuss include how to decide whether to apply “early” or “regular” admissions; is it better to take an AP course and risk a “B” grade or take the regular college prep section and probably earn an “A”; should you still take standardized tests if the college states it is “SAT/ACT optional” and how many times; how much does applying for financial aid affect the admissions decision; when is the best time to visit a college; should you attend the information session and take the campus tour?

The program begins at 7:30 p.m. at the Stamford JCC, 1035 Newfield Ave., Stamford. For more information, contact Friedlander at Jewish Family Service, 203-921-4161 or email ClaireF@ctjfs.org orcdfriedlan@aol.com.
