BOE Talks Budget

The 2010-2011 budget discussions for Westport Public Schools continues this week.

In an all-day workshop Friday at the Westport Public Library, Westport's Board of Education discussed budget needs and priorities.

Superintendent Elliott Landon has proposed a $97.3 million budget for the upcoming 2010-2011 school year.

That's a 2.9 percent increase over the current school year's $94.6 million budget.

Here are some things the school board will consider as the talks continue:

  • Increasing the teacher reserve fund from two to three salaries
  • Look at restoring $70,000 to the budget to fund extracurricular and sports activities
  • Restoring paraprofessionals to the gifted student program
  • Removing an ESOL teacher
  • Examining how often elementary school libraries are shut down because of a lack of paraprofessionals to staff them
  • Discussing how many librarians are needed at Staples High School
  • Determining if it's possible to be reimbursed for school psychology services
