Club Green Wins $5,000 from CL&P

The high school club has been named one of three runners-up in a statewide contest.

Staples High School's Club Green has been named one of three runners-up in Connecticut Light & Power's "Live Green Win Green" contest, a company spokesman said today.

The contest, in its second year, challenged schools to demonstrate what they are currently doing to conserve energy and be environmentally responsible and propose a future "green" project they would like to implement. Each school had to submit a video and an essay as part of the application. Twelve schools made it to the final round, each vying for the top $20,000 prize.

Mitch Gross of CL&P said Staples was chosen as a runner-up, which means the school will recieve $5,000. Club members have said they plan to use the money to help fund a second annual Eco Fest, which is a free festival for the town focusing on environmental awareness.

Gross said Bulkeley High School of Hartford won the $20,000 prize. In addition to Staples, Conard High School in West Hartford and Wilby High School in Waterbury were selected as runners-up, earning each school a $5,000 grant for their future environmental projects.

The Bulkeley entry was chosen the winner for the quality of its video and essay, as well as their plan to start a recycling program at a school that currently does not have one, Gross said in a news release.

"We congratulate Bulkeley High School, its students and faculty who worked so diligently on their entry for their deserving recognition as the Live Green – Win Green winner," Jeff Butler, CL&P president and chief operating officer, said in a news release.  "We also acknowledge the great work done at Conard, Staples and Wilby high schools.  All had outstanding entries and should be very proud of their work as well."

The entries were judged by a panel of Connecticut educators and environmental leaders, including Dr. Elsa Nunez, president of Eastern Connecticut State University and Dennis Carrithers, assistant executive director for high school programs at the Connecticut Association of Schools.
