Description: People with Autism Spectrum Disorders come into contact with the criminal justice system at higher rates than their typically developing peers. Even when innocent, people with autism, by the very nature of their disability, may exhibit behaviors which raise the suspicion of law enforcement professionals, ultimately getting them into trouble. In this talk Dr. Westphal will discuss the current literature on autism and the criminal justice system with particular emphasis on ways in which parents can prepare children with autism to avoid criminal behavior, how to interact with law enforcement officials, and steps to take if they do get into trouble.

Speaker: Dr. Westphal is a Fellow in Forensic Psychiatry at Yale University's Department of Law and Psychiatry. He received training in both Adult Psychiatry and Child and Adolescent Psychiatry at Yale University and has both a research and a clinical focus on the populations with Autism Spectrum Disorders.
