Westport Center for Senior Activities schedule

The Westport Center for Senior Activities will be closed Nov. 11 in observance of Veterans Day.

Due to the upcoming holidays, the Parkinson’s support group has been rescheduled to meet on Nov. 19 and Dec. 16 from 10:00 a.m. to noon.
 
The Y’s Men/Center’s 6thAnnual Photographic Exhibition will be held through Jan. 8, 2010.
 
Social and Business Online Networking Class – Discover Web sites that can help your personal and business life. This class will discuss the following websites: MySpace, Facebook, LinkedIn, and YouTube. All of these sites are free. Ascertain which sites you’ll find useful. Class will be held from 9:00 a.m. to noon Wednesday. The cost is $20.00 per person and prepayment is required. Instructor Alan Weaver.
 
Laptop Basics – This class is a perfect follow–up for the computers 101 class if you happen to own a laptop or netbook. This single session will help you to become familiar with it. In addition to the applications it comes with; learn a few basics in hooking up to a wireless connection, charging, storage, etc. Bring your laptop and power cord to class, held from 1 to 4 p.m. Wednesday. The cost is $20.00 and prepayment is required. Instructor Alan Weaver.
 
“The Best of Times are Now…Meditation as Medication” – Facilitated by Dr. Paul Epstein. Through lecture, discussion, sharing, group support, learning mind-body skills of meditation, relaxation, stress reduction and attitudinal healing perspectives…the class will focus on learning to live life in the present moment…finding joy, peace, happiness and serenity in the midst of daily life’s inevitable ups and downs. Thursday, Nov. 5 and Thursday, Nov. 12 from 11:00 a.m. to Noon. FREE!
 
Just for Women – This women’s group will be an open forum for discussion, guest speakers will be invited and on occasion a film relevant to women will be shown. Facilitator is Mildred Bunche, LPC. The group meets from 3:30 to 5 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 5 and Thursday, Nov. 12. Cost is FREE!
 
FIELD TRIP Treasures from the Westport Schools Permanent Art Collection – Join us as we take a field trip to the Westport Historical Society for a private tour of its current exhibit. The exhibit will showcase over 40 artworks by some of the art world’s modern giants including Pablo Picasso, Alexander Calder, Jean Dubuffet, Victor Vasarely, Robert Motherwell, Christi and Jeanne Claude and Alex Katz, plus some of the WSPAC’s newly acquired donations. This event is free of charge but reservations are requested. The exhibit will take place at 1:15 p.m. Friday. Please plan to meet at the WestportHistorical Society, located at 25 Avery Place (across from Town Hall) in Westport.
 
PowerPoint – Learn presentation basics. Work with graphics, templates to make invitations or flyers. This class will be held from 9 a.m. to noon on Thursday and Nov. 12. The cost is $40.00 and prepayment is required. Instructor Alan Weaver.
 
REMINDER Culinary Classes with Chef Bob LaBrusciano from 10 a.m. to noon Saturday.  Chef Bob will be teaching a culinary class on holiday turkey dinner in half the time.
 
Magical Moments “Dubious Biographies” with Byron Matthews from 10:30 a.m. to noon Saturday. Byron Matthews, a lecturer from the Lifetime Learners Institute at Norwalk Community College, returns to The Westport Center for Senior Activities to continue his ever-popular ‘Magical Moments at The Movies’ series. The topic for the day will be “Dubious Biographies – How Biographies were Embellished in the Movies." FREE!
 
Word Part 1 – Word is the word processing package that allows you to write about anything, create flyers or posters. Experience with mouse and keyboard is necessary. The class will be held from 1 to 4 p.m. Monday and Nov. 13. The cost is $40.00 and prepayment and registration are required. Instructor Alan Weaver.
 
An Attitude of Gratitude – Channe Fodeman will facilitate this lecture/workshop, encouraging interaction and participation by seniors. Channe is a licensed clinical social worker who has a private practice in Westport and extensive experience working with seniors. All are welcome.  The lecture will be held from 1:15 to 2 p.m. Monday. FREE!
 
50 Diabetes Myths that Can Ruin Your Life: And the 50 Diabetes Truths that Can Save It!
In recognition of Diabetes Month in November, “patient–expert” Riva Greenberg will speak on the misconceptions, truths and advise people with diabetes on how they can take better care of themselves. Riva has lived with diabetes for 30–plus years and has substantially contributed to the patient literature. Riva views living with diabetes as a stimulus to create greater health and a more joyful life. The lecture will be held from 10:30 to 11:30 a.m. Tuesday. FREE!
 
Internet Basics (Introduction to the Internet) – Not sure how to navigate yourself around the internet?   This 3–session course taught by instructor Joan Singer, will introduce you to the joys and possibilities of the Internet in the 21st century. You first learn how to reach the Internet, followed by visiting popular sites like Mapquest, Weather, Facebook and even Youtube. Next, we cover basic techniques in searching for information using Google and other sites. Finally, you learn e-mail basics as well as tips to customize your Internet use. If you are just beginning to use the Internet, this is a good place to start. Experience with a mouse and keyboard is a must. The classes will be held from 1:30 to 3:30 p.m. Tuesday’s Nov. 10, 17 and 24. The cost is $40.00 and prepayment and registration is required.
 
Food Safety: A Need to Know Guide – Nancy Feriello, M.S., R.D., CD–N from the Senior Nutrition Program of Catholic Charities will be here to discuss how to make safe food handling a life-long commitment to minimize your risk of food borne illness. From 10:45 to 11:45 a.m. Nov. 12. FREE!
 
Just for Men – An informal safe haven for men 60+ years of age to discuss issues related to family, retirement, job loss/change, children, grandchildren and other unlimited topics. Share your feelings and concerns with other men in an atmosphere of respect and confidentiality. From 7:00 to 8:30 p.m. Nov. 12. FREE!
 
Blood Pressure Screening – Nursing and Home Care will offer a free blood pressure screening from 9:30 to 11:30 a.m. Nov. 13. FREE!
 
Email Yahoo – Learn the basics including attachments and address books from 10:00 a.m. to noon Nov. 13. The cost is $15.00 and prepayment and registration is required.
 
A Psychosocial Referral of Scarlett O’Hara – Certain literary figures seem to be suitable for psychiatric intervention. Scarlett O’Hara, the heroin in Gone with the Wind seems especially needy of clinical support. Shelly Berman, LCSW, DCSW, invites you to join her on a journey back to 1872 as Ms. O’Hara is referred to a social worker for supportive intervention. Please come ready to offer your opinion and insights and be sure to bring your sensitivity and sense of humor. From 1:00 p.m. to 2:00 p.m. Nov. 13. Saturday Social, Nov. 14 – A luncheon, prepared by Chef Bob, consisting of Chicken Filetto Pomodoro with whole wheat spaghetti, roasted zucchini, dessert, and beverage will be served from 12:30 – 1:30 p.m. Following lunch, from 1:30 p.m. – 3:00 p.m., Bob Lasprogato and Uptown Jazz, who will provide a musical afternoon filled with jazz favorites. Uptown Jazz members, Bob Lasprogato, Paul Boehmke, Roger Young and Esdras Lubin have been performing throughout New York and Connecticut for many years. The cost to attend the Saturday Social is $6.00/person and pre–payment and registration is required.
