Need Help to Buy School Supplies? Westport's Offering

If you need some help paying for school supplies for your kids in the coming school year, Westport Town Hall is offering assistance. Here's a news release from the town Department of Human Services:

Barbara Butler, director of the Westport Department of Human Services, announces the scheduling of the Town’s 2014 “Back to School Program” which will run from Monday, Aug. 4 through Friday, Aug. 8 at Town Hall.

This program offers new backpacks and school supplies as well as Walmart and Payless gift cards to income-eligible families with children in Westport.

The Back to School program depends solely upon the generosity of community individuals and organizations. Last year, 188 Westport students from 100 income-eligible families received back to school supplies as well as gift cards for a new pair of school shoes.

That represents almost 10 full classrooms of students and in this economy participation is expected to grow even greater.

Donations at any level are greatly appreciated.  The Department of Human Services appreciates tax-deductible monetary donations made payable to “Town of Westport/DHS Family Programs” (memo: Backpacks) and mailed to Department of Human Services, 110 Myrtle Ave., Westport, CT 06880.

If you prefer, donations of new school supplies of all types, including backpacks (the larger the better!), may be dropped off Monday through Friday from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. in Room 200 at Westport Town Hall.

In addition, gift cards of any amount to Staples, Target, Walmart, Old Navy, etc. are very much appreciated.
