RTM OKs $98K for School Security Audit

Westport's Representative Town Meeting (RTM) voted Tuesday to appropriate $98,000 to fund a school security audit, Westport News reports.

The New York-based firm Kroll Advisory Solutions will be conducting the audit. The vote comes almost six months after the Dec. 14, 2012 shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary School, which left 20 students and six staff members dead.

The audit has been in the works since January, when the Board of Finance approved $50,000 for the study. The cost was increased by $50,000 following a decision to include local police and educators in the direction of the audit.   Westport's school board put the brakes on going forward with the audit after the RTM criticized the plan because only one security consulting firm had been recommended and the job was not put out for bid.

The security study will assess threats and vulnerability at Westport's eight public schools, and how school and community officials should work with local law enforcement to respond to and deal with threats.

Westport's neighboring town of Fairfield is undergoing a similar security study, though Fairfield's is spearheaded by the local police department.
