FCIAC Honors Numerous Staples Coaches

Five Wreckers mentors named FCIAC Coach of the Year in their respective sport.

During the FCIAC's annual awards banquet on Tuesday, five Staples coaches were named league Coach of the Year  in their respective sports.

The winners from Staples were: Marce Petroccio, football; Laddie Lawrence, boys indoor track; Bruce Betts, boys volleyball; Paul McNulty, boys lacrosse, and Cathy Schager, girls lacrosse.

  • Petroccio guided the Wreckers to the FCIAC championship — their first since 2003. The Wreckers finished the season 12-1, losing to Cheshire, 28-21, in Class LL title game. Prior to that loss, Staples was ranked No. 1 in the state.  Petroccio boasts a 145-39 record in his 17 seasons at Staples.
  • Lawrence led Staples to a fifth-place in the Class LL meet, the highest finish of any FCIAC team.
  • Betts, who also was named FCIAC spring coach of the year, guided the Wreckers to a 17-0 regular season and their eighth consecutive FCIAC championship. Staples extended its winning streak to 101 matches before losing to Southington in the Class L final, which denied the Wreckers a fifth consecutive state championship. Staples finished the season 21-1.
  • McNulty, in his first year, led his alma mater to an undefeated regular season (16-0) and the top seed in the Class L state tournament. The Wreckers advanced to the semifinals, losing to defending four-time state championship Fairfield Prep, 9-8, in a hard-fought game to finish the year 18-4.
  • Under Schager's direction, the Wreckers made a surprising run to the Division II state championship game, falling to league rival Fairfield Ludlowe, 15-9. Staples also made the FCIAC playoffs and concluded the season with a 14-7 record.
