GFA Boys Defeat Second-Ranked Hyde, 56-53

The Dragons run their winning streak to 12 games and improve to 15-3

For the second time in as many Wednesdays, the Greens Farms Academy boys basketball team posted an impressive victory.

Greenwich's Sean Obi scored 15 points and grabbed 21 rebounds as the Dragons made the two-hour drive to Woodstock a successful one by defeating the second-ranked Hyde School 56-53 in a thriller.

Last Wednesday, GFA defeated Hamden Hall, the top-ranked team in New England, 68-60. The latest triumph extended the Dragons'  winning streak to 12 games and improved their overall record to 15-3.

Hyde had a chance to take the lead, but missed a contested dunk with 11 seconds remaining. Greenwich's Matt Tate then converted both ends of a one-and-one on the ensuing possession to give GFA a 56-53 and Hyde missed a potential game-tying 3-pointer at the buzzer.

"A win against a boarding school is often a great win," GFA coach Doug Scott said. "These guys draw their talent from across the country. None of Hyde’s starters were from Connecticut. However, our Nigerian (Sean Obi) was nine points better than their Nigerian (Christione Eijga), so that helped.”

GFA led by as many as 17 points early in the second half, but then got away from getting Obi his touches. A long stretch of empty GFA possessions fueled Hyde’s  running game.

"The momentum swing and crowd energy then fueled their shooters’ confidence," Scott added. "Next thing you know, we have a dramatic finish to deal with."

Greenwich's Hunter Eggers added 15 points for GFA while Westport's Brien Comey grabbed 10 rebounds. New Haven's Tremont Waters chipped in with nine points.

Robert Lewis led Hyde with 19 points and Nasir Ibraham added 13.

GFA is back in action on Friday when the Dragons face St. Luke's (6 p.m.). It will be Senior Night as Comey, Fairfield's Will Pavlis and Darien's Wills Rooney will be honored.
